Use in Traditional Medicine
Korean ginseng has been used for centuries as a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) remedy. The name, which was originally derived by the ancient. Mandarin Chinese, translates to “man plant,” because the roots of the plant resemble the form of a human being.
The ancient Greeks later added the botanical prefix “panax,” which was based on their word for panacea, meaning “cure all.” Both cultures relied on ginseng root to alleviate numerous health conditions and afflictions. Due to population booms, wild Korean ginseng is now incredibly rare and expensive, so nearly all the product on the market is cultivated on farms in North Korea.
On these farms, the roots (grown white like all ginsengs) are harvested in the traditional manner and thenonly the best quality roots undergo the process to become red ginseng. These roots are steamed for up to 10 hours, which converts some of their starches to active principles (ginsenosides) as well as concentrating their existing ginsenosides.
The process increases their energy and stamina enhancing abilities and turns them into their characteristic reddish color. The roots are then slowly dried and processed into a variety of forms including tea, powders and supplements.
